4D Soft is making headway in the development of its new testing tool

WIRE is a tool representing new technology that does not require test cases to be designed manually in the traditional way. Test cases verify and test whether the processes of the software – its various nodes – operate correctly. In a traditional setup, the tester prepares the test plan by following these nodes one by one. In applications based on business processes, these nodes have already been modelled in the control flow graph of the program, enabling an intelligent testing robot to map the processes and automatically create the test cases required for each node. This is supposed to be realized by the prototype developed as the outcome of 4D Soft’s project launched in July 2009.

Based on the control flow graph model, WIRE therefore automatically tests all nodes of the process which it is instructed to test. In comparison with current technologies, this requires a much smaller amount of resources and even ensures greater precision owing to automated mapping. Since the same model is used for design and validation, change control also becomes significantly easier.

In the market, there are model-based testing tools that are built on similar principles, however, these  specialize in testing specific systems such as industrial automation, the control of vehicles and aircraft, etc. Rather than this kind of testing, WIRE focuses on the field of business processes involving greater complexity. Such complex processes pose additional problems, to which we seek solutions as part of the project. The project is progressing to plan. In the first phase, the system-level design of the project was completed, the work environment was defined along with the development of a test model which can be used to define test cases and the rules required for testing, and the initial steps were taken in the design of the data generator, a complex module that is capable of generating data for each test case.

WIRE end users are software developers and testers who are involved in the IT design, development and testing of business processes.  For such user groups, the major novelty of the system is that it aligns their work, ensuring better cooperation for design and testing.
